As a competitive swimmer and lifeguard I understand the importance of water safety, even for experienced swimmers. No one is drown proof. Throughout July I'll swim a marathon to help raise awareness for water safety and drowning prevention. My goal is to raise $1,000 for Colin's Hope and I would greatly appreciate any contribution from my friends and family. I swim in honor of Connor Gage, Elise Cerami, and Evan Billingsley; all who were about my age and excellent swimmers. On July 12th I kicked off my marathon with an open water swim (with a water guardian, saftey bouy, and bright colored swim cap). I'm excited to help to raise money and awareness for water safety! She was almost 14 when she fatally drowned at swim practice. Just 2 weeks before her drowning, I remember Elise calling me from UT Swim Camp excited that she swam a mile in under 20 minutes. This was a great accomplishment, as she was better at breast stroke than free style. 4 years later, it is still hard to imagine that this could happen to such a skilled swimmer. BTW, I think every competitive swimmer should have lifeguard rescue skills. Sadly, there was a girl in the lane next to Elise that could NOT recognize that Elise was in trouble in the water. She saw Elise around 3 minutes. It wasn't until the swimmers in Elise's lane started swimming free style that they noticed Elise at 6 minutes. It was another 2 minutes before they got Elise out of the water and started CPR. Thank you for recognizing the need for water safety for competitive swimmers.
